Atomic Habits Book Review | James Clear

Atomic Habits by James Clear, now so far I’ve read around 21.56% of this book, and if you know about the 80-20 rule, usually 20% of the book contains 80% of the information. 1. Core Idea of a Habit and what it is - A habit is an action that is repeated over and over. Like a routine - The reason habits are important, is because it’s a way for the brain to memorize the most effective way to get the results you want How habits work: 4 steps to habit - Cue: this is the trigger to habit. ( it can be when you first get home, or when you get stress) – its predicting rewards is coming - Cravings: is you looking forward to the feeling you’ll get, whether its having a clean mouth or whether its relief after smoking - Response: it’s the actual habit you perform, brushing your teeth or smoking - Reward: what you get to satisfy your craving a fresh mouth or moment of calm with a smoke. 2. Improving your Life - It only takes Tiny changes, change your life - He focus on a lot on the 1% rule, that if you improve just by 1% each day because of compound interest, in a year you will be around 37 times better - But in the short term, you wont see those improvements Compound interest affect of habits - Applies to the gym: you go to the 3 times a week but see no results, in the first month, but the end of the year its obvious 3. Progress - Is not linear, its curve - Where you have two things happening, effort and time - You have to give your efforts time to turn into success For example - It's like bamboo that is barely visible for the first 5 years, but if you waeer it and take care of it - When it explodes itll grow over 90 feet in a matter of 6 weeks - Its like progress, you spend a PART of your time pursuing it and it seems like your not doing anything, but in reality your setting up the foundation and acquiring the knowledge you need. Plateau of latent potential - He talks about this when it comes to creating habits - And not getting results as fast as you want - The idea is to work at it until you break the plateu - And when you do, people will see it like an overnight success but you know the truth 4. Forget about goals and focus on systems - This is very interesting because I was doing this without knowing - Sure I set a goal every year of subs I want to get - But I focus more on the system I have place to get their For example: - If your goal Is to get A’s in your classes but you have a terrible studying system then you won't get their - But if you have a great schedule for sleeping, for studying - Then the grades will take care of themselves 5. Each cat did what you’d think — scramble around for minutes and freaking out! Clawing at walls. There was a lever that when the pressed door would open cat eventually found. Thorndike kept doing it to the same cats that escaped successfully. The response was after 20 or 30 times doing this avg cat escape in 6 seconds. It became habitual. Cats learned the power of habits - became conditioned and almost automatic. Saved all the panic of “OH MY GOD GOTTA ESCAPE!” -- Also got what they wanted FASTER with LESS effort: Out You might be thinking: “Won’t habits make my life dull? Robotic?
